RiverFest 2018 has come and gone, and we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect summer day along the banks of the Neponset River in Dorchester!
Turnout was more than double the 2017 event, with an estimated attendance of 2,000. It appeared that there was something for everyone, between live music, the climbing wall, kid’s crafts, fine arts appreciation, face painting, investigating marine life, learning to cast a fishing line, DCR rangers on horses, a surprise visit from the Boston Fire Department – and of course, boating on the Neponset River.
Believe it or not, 550 people were able to paddle the Neponset River in just 4 hours. Many thanks go to the staff at Paddle Boston, and all of the volunteers who helped with boats and life vests.
Our small staff at NepRWA couldn’t have pulled it off without the help of so many terrific team players, and we owe a great deal of thanks to the following:
Our presenting sponsor, ENE Systems, Inc.
Paddle Boston, who provided all of the canoes and kayaks.
Our incredible exhibitors: 92.5 The River, Boston Public Health Commission, Boston Public Library Bibliocycle, Boston Solar, Boston Water & Sewer, Delphi School of Milton, East Boston Savings Bank, Greater Boston Trout Unlimited, Healthy Homes, Liveable Streets, Mass Energy, Mass Fisheries, Mattapan Cultural Arts Development, Neponset Greenway Council, New England Aquarium, Resonant Energy, Rock Spot Climbing, UMass Boston, and Zoo New England
Food & drink vendors: Capriotti’s Food Truck, Dan’s Lemonade, Mr. Kool Ice Cream, Ruby’s Ice Cream Truck, and The Popcorn Man.
Music by the Neponset River Ramblers Bluegrass Band, Richie Parsons Band, and Boston ILL Harmonic.
NepRWA board members (past & present): Laura Vaites for assembling raffle baskets; Kyle McBurney for donating Red Sox tickets; Elisa Birdseye for managing the music; Jim Green, Dave Biggers, Richard O’Mara and Terry Dolan for helping with parking; Martha McDonough, Taber Keally, Rory McGregor, Brendan McLoughlin, and Steve Brayton for helping with the boats; and to Maria Lyons’ daughter and Maddy McGregor for helping with face painting.
Our AWESOME volunteers: Cathy Stern, Kathleen O’Connell, Beth McGregor, Mary McLoughlin, Heather and Derek Audet, Betsy Klein, Jacquelyn Turcinovic, Katrina Boutwell, Angela Redolfi, Kelly Reynolds, Jim Hu, Anthony Kret, and Ben and Nate Colson.
The Department of Conservation and Recreation and especially Chris Spillane, for making sure that Neponset Park was equipped for the event.
