Mass Highway, with funding from the Federal Highway Administration and the Mass Department of Transportation, will be upgrading existing stormwater management systems on each side of Interstate 93 where it crosses the Neponset River between Boston and Milton. Contaminated stormwater runoff from this location is a significant source of pollution in the Neponset River Estuary, and the project should result in significant improvements.
Indirectly, the project is the result of a successful lawsuit brought against the state Department of Transportation by the Conservation Law Foundation which demonstrated violations of the Clean Water Act from generally inadequate stormwater controls along major highways in Massachusetts. Thanks CLF!
