February 6, 2013 – Canton (Carly Rocklen)
Three White-breasted nuthatches, one Red-breasted nuthatch, one Black-capped chickadee, and the call of a Red-bellied woodpecker accompanied me on a mid-afternoon stroll along a Sugar maple-lined path through Ponkapoag Golf Course, to Ponkapoag Pond. The nuthatches were poking around the maple bark, finding tidbits to eat. Two of the White-breasted nuthatches were following each other around. The pond is covered in ice, now – a mottled, deep-grey – and partially blanketed in snow. Sunlight illuminated the plumes of Phragmites and other dried summer plants…. Quite a beautiful scene.
