Wetland Restoration Volunteers:   Purple loosestrife project

NepRWA seeks volunteers to help with a Purple loosestrife biological control project. This wetland restoration project offers a variety of volunteer positions that provide great hands-on opportunities for individuals, families, groups, adults, students, clubs, religious organizations, institutions, Scouts, and classes. Join us; get out in the field! Learn more here, or contact Restoration Manager Carly at 781-575-0354 x303 or rocklen@neponset.org.

Office Helpers

Do you have a little time available to help out on a regular basis? If you can plan on a half day or more a week (or a month!) on a regular basis, we can put you to work at the NepRWA office doing all kinds of things from helping with mailings, to organizing data, to preparing equipment for water testing days. This role involves working one-on-one with NepRWA Staff or independently at the office. Being able to commit to a reasonably regular schedule over at least a couple months is the key to making this kind of volunteer role work well. For more information, contact Carly Rocklen at 781-575-0354 or rocklen@neponset.org.

Citizen Water Monitoring Network: “Fill-In” Samplers

The CWMN program collects water quality samples six times a year at 41 locations around the watershed. Fill-In Samplers are on call to “fill-in” when the regular volunteer at a sampling site is not available for a particular sampling event. You’ll be trained in sampling techniques and then will coordinate with the Project Manager a few days before the sampling to get your site assignment. This volunteer job requires collecting samples between 6:00 AM and 7:30 AM on Wednesday mornings roughly once every six weeks. You must have your own transportation and be willing to travel to different parts of the watershed for each sampling. Learn more or contact Bill Guenther at 781-575-0354 or Guenther@neponset.org.

"On Call" Helpers

These volunteers have their names added to the "on call" volunteer email list (or phone list) and agree to "help when they can" with short-term group efforts to prepare mailings, provide an extra set of hands on the day of a special event, or assist with other miscellaneous tasks as they come up. Volunteers must have "helping hands" and enjoy chatting with fellow volunteers. Your own transportation is usually required. The location varies depending on the need - e.g., sometimes at the office and sometimes at a special event location. Time and schedule also depend on need. Generally short-term projects of 1 to 2 hours. Commitment is determined by the volunteer. For more information, contact Carly Rocklen at 781-575-0354 or rocklen@neponset.org.

Special Events Volunteers

These volunteers help to plan, organize or carry out Association public programs and special events such as canoe trips, nature walks, river cleanups, the annual meeting and other activities. Volunteers can help in many ways by serving on the planning or publicity committee for an event, by leading a program in their area of expertise (like a bird walk), or by providing willing hands to help out on the day of an event. Location varies depending on the event. Volunteers may work from home, at the office or at the event site. Timing depends on the volunteer's role, as do required skills. Time commitment is determined by the volunteer. For more information, contact Carly Rocklen at 781-575-0354 or rocklen@neponset.org.

Website Planning “Consultant”

This is a short-term assignment for an individual with a strong working knowledge of the pros and cons of various options for managing the “back-end” of a website. NepRWA is in the process of planning a major overhaul of our website, and we’re looking for someone who is quite knowledgeable about web hosting, website authoring tools, content management systems and implementation of web 2.0 tools such as blogs, wikis and the like. We need someone to help us evaluate our options for what kinds of technology and/or services would be the best platform for building and managing our new site. We are looking for someone with a very specific skill set who can give us some short-term advice and help shorten our learning curve, we’re not necessarily looking for someone to be our long term webmaster (though tat would be OK too). For more information, contact Carly Rocklen at 781-575-0354 or rocklen@neponset.org.

Photographers

Do you take pictures? We need pictures! We are looking for folks who like to take pictures (or who already have them). We need pictures of beautiful landscapes, pictures of pollution, pictures of flooding, pictures of NepRWA events and volunteers. Most of all we need pictures of people (and peoples faces) who are out enjoying or working on the watershed. You can take pictures wherever you want, whenever you want and share them with us. We’ll add them to our high resolution photo library (you can also join our group on Flickr!). If you’re willing we can also add your name to our list of “on-call” photographers that are willing to help take photos of special events, volunteer projects or other specific topics as the need arises. For more information, contact Carly Rocklen at 781-575-0354 or rocklen@neponset.org.

Tackle Your Own Special Project

Do you have a chunk of time available and an interest in tackling your own special project? We have lots of “projects” that need doing like organizing a river cleanup, surveying stream crossings, researching river history, making a river video, reopening a canoe launch, preparing a marketing survey. The possibilities are endless! As a special project volunteer, a NepRWA Staffer will work with you to identify a discrete project that matches your interests and skills, to develop a “scope of work” for your project, and to connect you with any training or special resources you may need. Then its up to you to manage your project, implement it, and bask in the glory of the outcome. Special Project volunteers can work in the office if they like or at their own home and the schedule is entirely up to you. If there’s a problem in the watershed that’s always bugged you or something you always wanted to get done, this is the volunteer role for you! For more information, contact Carly Rocklen at 781-575-0354 or rocklen@neponset.org.
