We
can make
a positive impact on the Neponset Watershed by conserving water.
That's because the amount of water we use directly affects the amount of water
in our environment and,
how we treat our wastewater directly affects the quality of water in the ground, in local
waterways like streams and ponds, in our drinking water and in Boston Harbor.
Whether our drains empty into
a septic system in our backyard or connect to underground pipes
that carry our waste out to Deer Island, everything we pour down our
drains eventually makes its way into our environment.
We
can reduce the negative impacts of household chores on the
environment and on our family's health by replacing harsh
cleaners with non-toxic, more environmentally-friendly blends. Also,
we can follow the directions on cleaners - using only the
recommended amounts, rather than more than necessary. If we use a septic
system, reducing our use of harsh chemicals in household
chores is
particularly important.
We
also can take the initiative to run
a local waterway cleanup and to pick-up
after pets.
